I’m a freelance photographer based in Portobello, mostly doing conferences and other events. Ten years ago I restarted my own machine, leaving a twenty-year career in IT to look for something more creative. I ended up back at college where I not only learned new skills but also made lots of new friends from several different countries. After three and a half years I had a degree in professional photography and started my business. Moving to Portobello a bit more than two years ago I have got involved with a number of local groups, including Art Walk Porty, the Save Bellfield campaign and the community choir, as well as helping to organise TEDx Portobello in both 2015 and 2016.
Although I was familiar with TED talks until I got involved in early 2015 I wasn’t aware of the concept of TEDx – locally organised events under the TED banner. The idea is an excellent one – a team of local volunteers organise their own TEDx event and share ideas both locally and worldwide, once the videos of the talks are shared online. Having been part of the team in both 2015 and 2016 I was delighted to take on a more significant role this time round as one of the new leadership team. I’m looking forward to this year’s event!
